Allowance

Kids Allowance by Age: How Much to Give at Every Stage (5–10)

There's no single official number — but most families land in a predictable range, and the exact dollar amount matters far less than starting the habit early and staying consistent. Here's a simple starting point by age, plus how to adjust it.

The rule of thumb: $1 per year of age, per week

It's the most common approach for a reason — it's easy to explain to a kid, and it scales naturally as they get older:

  • Age 5–6: $5–6/week — mostly symbolic, the point is the habit, not the amount
  • Age 7–8: $7–8/week — enough to save toward a small toy in a few weeks
  • Age 9–10: $9–10/week — first real taste of saving for something that takes a month or more

This isn't a rule you need to follow exactly. Family budget, cost of living, and how many kids you're splitting allowance across all matter more than hitting a specific number.

Should allowance be tied to chores?

Two schools of thought, and both work — pick based on what you're trying to teach:

  • Tied to chores: teaches that money is earned through effort — closer to how work works as an adult
  • Flat, unconditional: teaches budgeting and money management on its own, separate from household contribution (which many parenting experts argue kids should do regardless, as part of being in a family)

A common middle ground: a small flat base allowance, plus optional paid jobs for extra chores beyond the basics everyone's expected to do anyway.

The part that matters more than the number: consistency

Kids build money intuition through repetition — the same payout, on the same day, every single week. A generous allowance paid randomly teaches less than a modest one paid like clockwork. If payout day keeps slipping, the lesson kids actually learn is that money is unpredictable.

This is also the age where splitting allowance into purpose-based buckets — rather than one undifferentiated pile of cash — starts to matter. See our guide on the Save, Spend, Donate method for how that works in practice.
