The Save, Spend, Donate Method: How to Teach Kids to Manage Money

Hand a 6-year-old $10 in one pile, and it usually gets spent within the day. Split that same $10 into three labeled jars first, and something different happens — the kid starts making three small decisions instead of one big one. That's the whole idea behind Save, Spend, Donate.

What each jar is actually for

  • Save — money set aside toward something bigger than this week's allowance can buy. This is where delayed gratification gets practiced, not just talked about.
  • Spend — money that's theirs to use now, no questions asked. This matters as much as the other two — a kid who never gets to spend anything doesn't learn to spend wisely, they just learn to want things quietly.
  • Donate — a small share set aside for someone else, decided by the kid. Even a modest percentage builds the habit that money isn't only ever about yourself.

A starting split that works for most families

There's no universal correct ratio, but a common, easy-to-explain starting point is:

  • 70% Save — most of it, so a savings goal actually feels reachable
  • 20% Spend — enough for small, immediate purchases
  • 10% Donate — meaningful without feeling like a tax

Adjust freely. Some families run 50/40/10 for younger kids who need more spend-now motivation to stay engaged. The exact split matters far less than the fact that a split exists at all.

Why a savings goal makes the "Save" jar click

"Save" is abstract to a 7-year-old until it's attached to something specific they want — a toy, a game, a trip to the arcade. Once there's a named goal and a visible number counting up toward it, saving stops being a chore and starts being a countdown. That visual — watching a goal fill up week over week — is usually the single biggest driver of a kid actually sticking with the system past the first month.

Where this connects to allowance and chores

The jar system works on top of whatever allowance approach you use — see our allowance-by-age guide if you haven't settled on an amount yet, or our chore chart guide if allowance is tied to completed chores in your house.
